Congo, heart of Africa's wilderness

The DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (DRC), often called Congo-Kinshasa to distinguish it from the neighboring Republic of Congo, is a vast country in central Africa and one of the most biologically diverse nations on Earth. Spanning approximately 2.3 million square kilometers, it is the second-largest country in Africa and boasts an incredible array of ecosystems from the world's second-largest rainforest to active volcanoes, sprawling savannas, and mighty rivers including the Congo River, Africa's second-longest river.

The DRC is home to exceptional biodiversity, including endangered species such as mountain gorillas, okapi, forest elephants, and bonobos. The country's eastern region features the dramatic landscapes of the Albertine Rift, with volcanic mountains rising to over 5,000 meters. Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park, and Kahuzi-Biega National Park offer unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities. The climate is predominantly tropical, with high temperatures and humidity throughout the year, though temperatures are cooler in the eastern highlands. The DRC's cultural diversity is equally impressive, with over 200 ethnic groups and 700 local languages and dialects, though French serves as the official language.

Visitors can experience gorilla trekking, volcano hikes, chimpanzee habituation, and boat trips on Lake Edward. Despite conservation challenges, Virunga remains one of Africa's most remarkable protected areas.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its population of eastern lowland gorillas (Grauer's gorillas), the largest subspecies of gorilla. The park spans both lowland and mountainous terrain, dominated by the extinct volcanoes Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega. Beyond gorillas, the park hosts chimpanzees, forest elephants, and numerous bird species. The park offers exceptional gorilla trekking experiences and opportunities to explore diverse forest ecosystems. Conservation efforts here are crucial for protecting these magnificent primates and their habitat.

Garamba National Park

One of Africa's oldest national parks, Garamba is known for its efforts to protect the critically endangered northern white rhinoceros, though the population is now extremely small. The park features vast savannas, woodlands, and gallery forests along watercourses, hosting elephants, giraffes, hippos, and various antelope species. Despite significant conservation challenges, Garamba represents an important stronghold for Central African wildlife and offers visitors a remote wilderness experience in one of Africa's most untamed regions.

How to get there:

N'djili International Airport in Kinshasa and Goma International Airport in eastern DRC are the main international gateways. Several airlines serve the DRC including Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, and Brussels Airlines. Domestic flights connect major cities, though road travel can be challenging in many regions. For visits to eastern parks like Virunga, flying into Kigali, Rwanda and crossing the border is often more convenient.

Health Requirements:

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all travelers to the DRC. The CDC and WHO recommend vaccines for typhoid, hepatitis A and B, meningitis, rabies, and cholera. Malaria is present throughout the country, so antimalarial prophylaxis is essential. Ebola outbreaks have occurred in eastern DRC, so check current health advisories. Travel health insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.

VISA Requirements

Most visitors require a visa to enter the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tourist visas can be obtained from DRC embassies or sometimes on arrival, though advance application is recommended. Requirements typically include a completed application form, passport photos, proof of yellow fever vaccination, hotel reservations, and return flight tickets. Some nationalities may be eligible for e-visas. For gorilla trekking, special permits must be obtained in advance through licensed tour operators. Always check current visa requirements with the nearest DRC embassy before travel.
